Overview

The Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and National Shrine is a “House of Prayer for all people” at the World Trade Center. It reopened to the public in December 2022 in Liberty Park, an elevated park that overlooks the campus. Visitors can enjoy a view of the Church while meandering up the Park's east side ramp towards the Church's entrance in the center of the Park. All are welcome to enter the Church or stop by during a service. For hours and services, please visit the Church's website

The new building replaced the church of the same name, destroyed on 9/11. The new location at 130 Liberty Street is less than 50 yards east of where the original church once stood at 155 Cedar Street.

ARCHITECTURE

Designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, the Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and National Shrine is located on a 1,200-square-foot lot in Liberty Park, overlooking the National September 11 Memorial & Museum. Calatrava developed his plan from a wealth of Byzantine precedents, including the famous Church in Chora and Hagia Sophia in Istanbul. One of the most unique features of his design is a glowing façade made of 1,000 eighth-inch thick panels of Pentelic marble, sandwiched between panes of glass. This material allows light to indirectly filter into the church during the day and for the walls to have a warm glow from the outside at night.
